What the Foot?
A Roadmap to the Human Body Within a Single Footstep
2 Hour Introduction to Anatomy in Motion™ Workshop
March 22/2025 at Evolutio Sports Physio Melbourne

Do you struggle with challenging client cases that conventional corrective stretching and strengthening exercises don’t seem to help with?
Do you appreciate that the function of the foot is important for optimal whole body movement but don’t quite know where to start? WTF??
What the Foot? is an introduction to Anatomy in Motion™ workshop that is open to all movement and manual therapy practitioners interested in learning how to help their clients get better results in their rehab and performance programs using two highly valuable yet under-taught foci: Foot mechanics and holistic gait assessment.
The WTF workshop will provide a taste of Gary Ward’s unique framework for observing the human movement in the closed chain, helping you make connections from feet to skull through the gait cycle and work with bodies from the feet up in a whole new way.

In this 2 hour workshop we will cover:
- Introduction to Anatomy in Motion concepts and philosophy, including Gary Ward’s 5 Big Rules of movement, and the process of “Finding Center”.
- Self check-ins and assessments to use with your clients
- Definition and guided exploration of foot pronation and supination
- Definition and guided exploration of spine mechanics in gait
- Mapping foot-spine connections in two phases of gait: Suspension and Transition
We will be looking at the specific closed chain motions available at the feet and spine, clearly defining the movements of pronation and supination, using the AiM wedges to promote correct foot movement, and then linking these foot movements with the pelvis and spine in their precisely timed relationship that should occur with each footstep in the Flow Motion Model of gait.

You will receive:
- A set of AiM foot wedges ($20 value)
- Video recording of the workshop
- 15% off coupon to use on any in-person AiM seminar
- The opportunity to work through some of your own biomechanical issues and gain insights to hep your clients
- Complimentary coffee 🙂

Your Instructor

Monika Volkmar is an Upledger Institute certified craniosacral therapy practitioner, NSCA strength and conditioning specialist, and movement educator specialising in helping people with chronic pain and movement limitations. She is an international instructor for Anatomy in Motion- A system of movement that works by correcting movement and postural problems based on the human gait cycle, i.e. restoring how the body should be able to move when we walk. Monika’s first career path was contemporary dance, however after completing a fine arts degree in dance performance at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada, she sustained a string of injuries which forced her to quit dancing but inspired her to transition into the world of fitness, movement, bodywork to learn how to help herself and others become free from pain, too. Monika teaches AiM seminars in Canada and Australia, and her private bodywork practice is based at EsoLab in South Melbourne.
What is Anatomy in Motion™?

AiM, created and developed by Gary Ward, is a thought process for observing movement, guided by his map of the gait cycle called the Flow Motion Model, which describes how every single joint in the body moves within the space and time of a single footstep, from one end of its movement spectrum to the other, in all three dimensions.
At AiM we are interested in helping you understand closed chain biomechanics, meaning, how the body is set up to move when the foot is on the ground. We want you to question the conventional ways of working with bodies because learning about movement from the study of cadavers and 2D textbooks does not directly translate into how the body actually moves while we walk. For this reason, we find a lot of our students start their AiM learning journey by un-learn a few things they may have already learned in school and be open to seeing the body in motion in a completely new, sometimes “backwards”, way.
Along with teaching the biomechanics of the Flow Motion Model- a map of how the body moves through seven grounded phases of gait, we hope to show you how to use this map to assess bodies and find movement solutions for yourself and the people in your care. Our goal is to help all learners interested in using AiM at the highest level to not only understand and observe what every joint is doing in each of the phases mapped out in the FMM, but to develop their critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills to be able to work with the most complex cases successfully and stress free.
This learning journey begins with a solid appreciation of the fundamental building blocks of human motion- The actual articulation that takes place at each individual joint in the closed chain. Then, to understand how each joint coordinates with every other joint in the body in the specific coupled relationships that are the 7 full-body phases of gait in the Flow Motion Model

This intro workshop, What the Foot?, is a great way of dipping your toes into the world of AiM and see what the work can do for your own body. We hope you will be inspired to pass on what you learn to your clients, friends, and family and continue to journey through the joints with the AiM Phase 1-4 courses, and our online education stream.
